Hey guys,
Welcome to our new blog for the Politics and International Affairs committee. We have some great things lined up for this semester! First we kicked off the year with pariticpation in the Whitman Walker AIDS Walk in Washington DC. It was such a blast and we prepared for it by listening to one of the directors of Valley AIDS lead an interesting discussion on the development of AIDS in the Shenandoah Valley. We will have a follow up speaker from Rockingham Memorial Hospital discuss AIDS with us and the rest of Ashby Hall. The next big project we have coming up is our program for the United Nations. We will have food from around the world and lead discussions and a presentation on the UN and countries our residents are from. Another project we have in mind is sponsering a child through an organization and we will have more info on that later. Movie nights are going to be showcased this semester, one we are all excited about is a showcase of movie based on the Palestine/Israeli conflict. So we have a lot of fun stuff lined up and I hope to get all your comments on our projects! Thanks and I look forward to a new year with everyone!!!!

Update!
Hey everyone!
We are really excited about what's going on with our committee. We had a program watching Invisble Children last night which sparked an interesting discussion calling for action. This lead into our committee meeting, also last night.
We are going to partner up with other JMU students with the Schools for Schools program as well as do some of our own fundraising. Look out for our next program: we are going to make bracelets to as awareness/reminders of the invisible children we want to help and then give you the oppertunity to make extras that we will sell as fundraisers.
We are really excited about this project and hope you all turn out to the program!

Spring Update
Hey everyone! There are some really exciting things happening with the Politics and International Affairs Committee! Unfortunately, it looks like we are going to have to postpone our Chinese New Year celebration. However, check out our board on China in Ipe's hallway upstairs and learn something new about China! We have exciting news about our service project. We are going to get involved with Invisible Children. We are partnering with other groups on campus to raise money for our sister middle school in Uganda. Look out in the next couple weeks for a bake sale on the Commons to raise money for the middle school. We are really excited for this project and are anxious to get involved... look out for us taking over the Ashby kitchen and baking away!!
We have our committee meeting this Tuesday at 10:30.
This semester is going to be great... everyone keep hoping for the snowfall this week!!

Spring '07
Hey everyone,
First of all, welcome back to the new semester. I hope that everyone had a wonderful and relaxing break. The end of the semester saw the loss of two committee members, Will and Kristi, who both went overseas on the Study Abroad program. I'm glad to say that in their place, we are welcoming two new members:
Anika and Marina
The committee started off a little bit sluggish at the beginning of the semester but picked up the pace and as of now, we are currently in the process of hosting our fourth "Spotlight on a region" program. This time around, we chose to focus the spotlight on China, which has emerged as a global power with immense potential to become a superpower. Going along with this, we have also planned to commemorate the Chinese New Year with a fun program on February 18th, 2007. This event will feature games, presentations, food and prizes; ALL WITH A CHINESE THEME!!! It promises to be a fun and educational time for everyone.
As far as our service committment, we are still planning and searching, as opportunities come far and few between. Some of the more promising ideas that are still in the planning stages are:
- Having International Days at elementary and middle schools in Harrisonburg. These days would be presentations by committee members on different countries around the world
- Going to High Schools in the area and similarly giving presentations and engaging in political discussions.
The committee is excited about these ideas and, although they will take alot of planning and time committment, they are guaranteed to learn and also help in educating many local students. Its also sure to be an experience of a lifetime!!!
Thats all for this week. Come back weekly to check on the updates and see whats going on with the committee. Have a great week.

Semester Wrap-Up
We’re nearing the end of the 1st semester, and all I can say is that it’s been nothing short of a success for the committee, and Ashby as a whole. I think I can speak for the committee when I say that it has been a lot of fun getting together every week, planning and hosting events that are fun and also informative on global politics and international affairs. There was a lot of enthusiasm from the committee and members were very dedicated in making the committee a success right from the beginning. Throughout the semester, we hosted four programs – one more than was required – through the premise of our central theme which was “Spotlight On…” This theme aimed at shining light on a region and specific country within that region. This was done on a monthly basis, and the regions that were chosen were:
· Latin America and Venezuela
· Europe and France
· Africa and Darfur
Three of the four programs we had were based on these regions. For Latin America, we had a documentary on Che Guevara, the Argentinian revolutionary. For Europe, we created a French café in the Ashby TV Lounge, complete with hot cocoa, coffee, chocolate éclairs and croissants. There was also a little quiz on French political information that was posted on the Bulletin Board during that month of October. The final program was a movie showing of Hotel Rwanda, which illustrated glaring similarities to the current crisis in Darfur. An enlightening discussion followed this program, and eventually led to the committee deciding on our Service project for next semester, which hopefully will be to create awareness on the Darfur crisis by holding vigils, distributing flyers. The exact details are still to be worked on, but it promises to be learning experience for all members involved and hopefully for the residents as well.
On a sad note, we will be losing two members next semester as they will be participating in Semester Abroad programs. Will and Kristi will be sorely missed and we all wish them well in Spain and Italy respectively.
On behalf of the committee, I’d like to wish everyone a very Happy Holidays!
