Hey everyone! There are some really exciting things happening with the Politics and International Affairs Committee! Unfortunately, it looks like we are going to have to postpone our Chinese New Year celebration. However, check out our board on China in Ipe's hallway upstairs and learn something new about China! We have exciting news about our service project. We are going to get involved with Invisible Children. We are partnering with other groups on campus to raise money for our sister middle school in Uganda. Look out in the next couple weeks for a bake sale on the Commons to raise money for the middle school. We are really excited for this project and are anxious to get involved... look out for us taking over the Ashby kitchen and baking away!!
We have our committee meeting this Tuesday at 10:30.
This semester is going to be great... everyone keep hoping for the snowfall this week!!

Spring '07
Hey everyone,
First of all, welcome back to the new semester. I hope that everyone had a wonderful and relaxing break. The end of the semester saw the loss of two committee members, Will and Kristi, who both went overseas on the Study Abroad program. I'm glad to say that in their place, we are welcoming two new members:
Anika and Marina
The committee started off a little bit sluggish at the beginning of the semester but picked up the pace and as of now, we are currently in the process of hosting our fourth "Spotlight on a region" program. This time around, we chose to focus the spotlight on China, which has emerged as a global power with immense potential to become a superpower. Going along with this, we have also planned to commemorate the Chinese New Year with a fun program on February 18th, 2007. This event will feature games, presentations, food and prizes; ALL WITH A CHINESE THEME!!! It promises to be a fun and educational time for everyone.
As far as our service committment, we are still planning and searching, as opportunities come far and few between. Some of the more promising ideas that are still in the planning stages are:
- Having International Days at elementary and middle schools in Harrisonburg. These days would be presentations by committee members on different countries around the world
- Going to High Schools in the area and similarly giving presentations and engaging in political discussions.
The committee is excited about these ideas and, although they will take alot of planning and time committment, they are guaranteed to learn and also help in educating many local students. Its also sure to be an experience of a lifetime!!!
Thats all for this week. Come back weekly to check on the updates and see whats going on with the committee. Have a great week.
